NEW HARVEST ABOUT ARCHAEOLOGY IN SOUTH VIETNAM
Pham Duc Manh
Based on an investigation of a number of “Biển Hồ Culture” sites, these paper attempts to shed light on the ancient areas bordered “Ocean Lake” in Gia Lai province. With some new characteristic archaeological artifacts described in detail it is then possible to apply the information to the pre- and proto-historical context of the region and attempt to understand the Biển Hồ Culture within the Central Highlands and especially its relationship to the Southeastern Parts of Vietnam in the Metal Ages.
The paper is also to present a preliminary report on the 2001-2002 campaign at Long An province. Work concentrates on training our students in fieldwork at the pre- and proto-historical sites (Rach Nui, An Sơn, Loc Giang, Go Canh Nong and Go Ô Chua, Co Son Tu). Based on the findings a common dating of these sites in the Metal and Oc Eo Civilization Ages is most probable. This paper will summarise the author research about some typical sites of Long An province – ancient villages of aboriginal rice farmers and handicraftsmen during II – I Millenium BC to 2 – 7th centuries AD.
